Mason Mount’s importance to Michael Carrick’s tactics could not be clearer ahead of Manchester United’s 2026-27 Premier League campaign at Old Trafford.
The 27-year-old Manchester United No 7 has been a key part of the pre-season summer tour and featured in all three matches so far under Michael Carrick.
Mason Mount has also been handed the Man Utd captain’s armband on two occasions during pre-season amid Bruno Fernandes’ absence from the tour.
The United star, who has been at Old Trafford since 2023, has struggled to consistently feature for the Red Devils due to injury setbacks during his run.

Andy Mitten shared what has been said about Mason Mount during Man Utd training this summer
Mason Mount’s injury-hit Manchester United record caught up with him during the 2025-26 campaign, including during Michael Carrick’s interim managerial reign.
However, the optimism is now brewing for Mount to finally hit his stride at the Red Devils and perform at the level that was seen during his Chelsea playing days.
Speaking on The Athletic’s Talk of The Devils podcast, Andy Mitten revealed that Mount’s time in training has caught the eye of his United teammates this summer.
“There’s nothing to stop you talking and the players I spoke to several on Saturday — off the record — and you’re just saying like, ‘Who’s training well, who’s doing well?’” Mitten explained.
“Just to build up your picture of what’s actually happening inside the football club that you’re covering and a couple of them said to me: ‘Mason Mount, oof.’
“Like, really complimentary about him; I think you can see the way that he’s playing, he’s doing well.”

If any United fan has been watching pre-season, then it is clear to see why the optimism is slowly surfacing around Mount’s role for the 2026-27 campaign.
Mount is a deeply frustrating player because of his injury setbacks, not because of what he brings to the table for Man Utd in matches since his move from Chelsea.
There is a reason why so many United managers, both past and present, have used him for a sporadic appearance in the first moment that he becomes available.
The biggest test for Mount will be whether he can replicate a Luke Shaw-esque season in the 2026-27 campaign by avoiding any major injuries during his run at Old Trafford.
