Manchester United have reportedly entered the race to sign highly rated Spanish defender Jorge Salinas as they continue searching for a new left-back this summer. The Red Devils are ready to compete with Barcelona for the Racing Santander youngster. He is regarded as one of Spain’s brightest defensive prospects.

As reported by The Sun, Manchester United will target Salinas if they cannot sign Lewis Hall. The 19-year-old impressed for Racing Santander last season. He provided six assists in 33 appearances and played a key role as the club won promotion from Spain’s second division.
Salinas also impressed for Spain at the UEFA Under-19 European Championship. Manchester United scouts watched him closely throughout the tournament. The report says they believe he is ready to step into the first-team squad despite his young age.
Salinas has stood out because of his attacking style, calmness on the ball and willingness to get forward. He has steadily progressed during the past year, and his performances have attracted the interest of some of the best European clubs. United see the value of signing young talent, and Salinas certainly has that quality. Manchester United may be prepared to pay Racing Santander’s asking price, but it could be more difficult to convince Salinas to move. United are willing to trigger the defender’s £13.7 million release clause if Lewis Hall remains unavailable. However, Salinas is believed to prefer a move to Barcelona. That preference makes a transfer to Old Trafford less likely for now. Even so, the race is not over.
Barcelona are reportedly unwilling to raise their £6.9 million valuation. That leaves a big gap between their offer and Racing Santander’s asking price. If Barcelona do not improve their bid, Manchester United could step in. The Premier League club could trigger the release clause and move quickly to sign Salinas before other clubs join the race.

How Salinas fits into Carrick’s plans
Manchester United’s need for another left-back has become clear during this transfer window. Newcastle keep declining offers for Lewis Hall after already losing key players, but he is still the first choice for United due to his Premier League experience.
The Red Devils will turn their attention to Salinas if they cannot sign Hall. Luke Shaw is expected to begin the season as the first-choice left-back, while Patrick Dorgu could play in a more advanced role. That would give Salinas time to settle into life at Old Trafford.
