Manchester United’s goalkeeping reshuffle could yet create an opening for Orlando Gill, with fresh claims from Argentina insisting England remains the most realistic destination for the San Lorenzo goalkeeper.
United are parting ways with Altay Bayındır and Radek Vítek this summer, while Karl Darlow has arrived to provide experienced cover.
With Senne Lammens also expected to compete for the No.1 shirt, there could still be room for another young goalkeeper as Michael Carrick reshapes his options.
Speaking on Paraguayan programme La Gran Jugada, ESPN Argentina journalist Leandro Alves, who covers San Lorenzo, suggested the strongest interest in Gill continues to come from England.
“England is the most concrete”
Alves first played down recent reports linking Juventus with the Paraguay international.
“Today there’s talk of Juventus, yes. The information I have is that there has been a call to the player’s representatives, but nobody has spoken to San Lorenzo. It was simply an enquiry to understand Gill’s situation and his demands.”
It is not the first time theplayer’s agents make waves in the local press. But he then pointed firmly towards England.
“In England is where things are most concrete today. There are two people in England who run a company dedicated specifically to scouting goalkeepers. That company has held meetings with both San Lorenzo and Gill’s representatives.”
According to the journalist, the goalkeeper is exceptionally highly rated.
“They say he is one of the best-rated goalkeepers in the world from a scouting perspective. If a Premier League club hires them, they will recommend Orlando Gill.”
Waiting for the first Premier League offer
Alves also reiterated that, despite growing interest, San Lorenzo are still waiting for the first formal bid from England.
“The only formal offer was from Olympiacos. It came after Paraguay’s defeat at the World Cup. San Lorenzo rejected it because it was close to €3.4m (£2.9m).”
He added there is still plenty of time for the situation to develop.
“The European market doesn’t close until 31 August. We’re only at the beginning of the month and this situation could last throughout the transfer window.”
Potential complication for transfer
Finally, Alves highlighted another factor that could complicate negotiations.
“San Lorenzo have a €6.9m (£5.9m) release clause for Gill. But if they sell him for €8.6m (£7.4m), they have to give half of that fee to the goalkeeper because his contract recognises 50% of the transfer.”
“That creates another issue – whether it becomes a transfer or whether the player activates the release clause. We have to wait because the formal offer still hasn’t arrived.”
Ipswich Town have also been credited with interest in Gill throughout the summer, while Aston Villa’s reported admiration came at a time when Emiliano Martínez looked close to leaving, something which now seems far less likely.
