Manchester United fans, look away. You might have heard these words from Ruben Amorim before.
Calciomercato report comments from the AC Milan manager today following a friendly with Inter Milan in Perth. And they’re comments that Manchester United fans will be very accustomed to.
The Suffering Theme
Ruben Amorim, suffering whilst at Manchester United
According to the Portuguese manager, the 1-1 draw was a game in which they had to suffer to learn about themselves.
“It is important not to have lost, but the most important thing is to improve as a team,” he said.
“We started very well, pressing very well, but Inter have a lot of experience, they immediately understood what we were doing and we suffered them at the end of the first half and at the beginning of the second half.
“Then we improved: well, the last twenty minutes of the game. It was a good test, but we need more games to try all the players.”
Twist on suffering theme, he wants less
Ruben Amorim then admitted he thinks his new team need to improve in all areas, again citing his favourite word, suffer.
“Everything, especially with the ball,” he added.
“If we have more possession, we will suffer less. But it’s something it takes time, which we have to work for: we have to have more possession to suffer less.”
Manchester United Buzzword
Suffering became the catch word for the Portuguese coach during his time at Manchester United. Their fans were regularly told that suffering, both the teams and their own, would help the side to improve down the line.

Except, that improvement never really came.
Instead, Manchester United fans were forced to suffer in the stands before Amorim’s eventual sacking. Now the suffering is considerably less under Michael Carrick.
And Amorim, it seems, has taken his suffering to AC Milan instead.
Now it appears they who need to suffer before coming out the better for it. Whether he remains in Milan long enough to see it pay off, remains to be seen.
