Mauricio Pochettino puts all Man Utd rumors to rest as he extends contract with USA
Manchester United - Man Utd
Mauricio Pochettino has made his final decision. He will not join Man Utd next season. Instead, Pochettino will be extending his contract with USA as their head coach till 2030.
Pochettino puts Man Utd rumors to rest
Pochettino won’t be joining the Red Devils anytime soon. As reported by ManchesterEveningNews, talks are going on with the US Soccer Federation [USSF] for a contract extension. Although the United States didn’t make it beyond the Round of 16, the management has complete faith in the 54-year-old manager from Argentina. Pochettino joined Team USA as their head coach in 2024. Before that, he was part of Chelsea. He was their manager between 2023 and 2024.
Before making his name as the team manager of USA, Pochettino represented Argentina from 1992 to 2002. He was part of the Argentina team that was knocked out in the group stage of the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Before that, he also represented Argentina’s U23 squad in the CONMEBOL qualifiers for the Barcelona Olympics. Unfortunately, Argentina finished third in the group stage, and therefore failed to qualify for the final round.
Why Pochettino won’t join Man Utd?
There were multiple reports that linked Pochettino with Man Utd. However, Michael Carrick was already made the new manager for the 2026-27 season. As such, it is unlikely that Pochettino will join Old Trafford anytime soon.
Michael Carrick joined Man Utd as the interim manager in early 2026. Within five months, he led the team to a respectable third-place finish at the Premier League. Carrick had previously served United as the caretaker manager in 2021. Apart from that, he also played for the Red Devils between 2006 and 2018. He has seen the golden days of the team under former manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Now he wants to bring back those same days as the team’s new manager.

Road ahead for Mauricio Pochettino
Pochettino will be resting for a while. He recently led Team USA to one of their best performances since the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Although the Americans lost in the Round of 16, their performance convinced the management to retain Pochettino as the team manager until the next World Cup, which is rare in modern **football**as of now.
Pochettino will now aim to give USA its best ever performance at the FIFA World Cup. The American team had finished third in the inaugural edition held in 1930. Since then, their best performance came in the 2002 edition, when they made it to the quarter-final stage. They lost to Germany 1-0, who eventually made it to the finals. After that, USA mostly made it to the Round of 16 in most of the subsequent editions, but were unable to progress beyond it.
If Pochettino chose USA over Man Utd, it is beneficial for both. The Red Devils are regaining the lost momentum under new manager Michael Carrick. Likewise, the American team is redeveloping under the able management of Pochettino. While winning the World Cup is far from a cakewalk, USA can take some inspiration from the Spanish team.
After winning the World Cup in 2010, La Roja went into oblivion. They were knocked out in group stage in the 2014 edition, and were unable to progress beyond the Round of 16 in 2018 and 2022 respectively. However, they bounced back to win their first World Cup title in 16 years by defeating the defending champions from Argentina in the final. It will be interesting to see if Pochettino adapts the same playbook for the 2030 World Cup.
