Why Shea Lacey is giving Michael Carrick a Man Utd dilemma
Shea Lacey has done more than simply enjoy a promising Manchester United pre-season.
The 19-year-old has started matches, scored and produced decisive moments against stronger opposition. His emergence now leaves Michael Carrick with a decision over whether regular first-team involvement would be more valuable than sending him elsewhere for senior football.
Lacey’s latest performance strengthened that argument. Sky Sports described him as particularly sharp against Atletico Madrid, with the teenager helping United win the penalty for Bryan Mbeumo’s equaliser.

Shea Lacey has taken his Man Utd opportunity
Lacey arrived at pre-season with plenty of academy attention already surrounding him.
What Carrick needed to discover was whether the winger could translate that promise into senior football.
The early signs have been encouraging.
Lacey started as United’s No.10 against Rosenborg and opened the scoring with a curling finish from outside the penalty area. Manchester United’s official coverage highlights Lacey’s goal in the 5-0 victory.
His performance against Atletico was arguably more significant.
Lacey created an opening for Mbeumo with an excellent cross before winning the second-half penalty. Sky Sports noted how comfortable he looked both centrally and from the right.
Amad and Mbeumo offer established options on the right, while Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount can occupy central attacking positions.
ReadManUtd reported this week that Mount’s performances have already influenced United’s remaining transfer plans. Lacey is beginning to provide Carrick with another internal option.
Carrick now faces Shea Lacey decision
The temptation with an academy player performing this well is to immediately demand more first-team football.
United still need to manage Lacey carefully.
Remaining around Carrick’s senior squad would give him opportunities in cup competitions and allow him to learn alongside experienced attacking players. However, minutes could become harder to find once United’s World Cup players are fully reintegrated. Patrick Dorgu’s role adds another complication.
ReadManUtd revealed on Wednesday that Carrick sees Dorgu playing further forward, increasing the competition for attacking places.
That leaves Carrick balancing development against opportunity.
A loan could provide Lacey with regular senior football. Keeping him at Old Trafford would give United an exciting option who has already shown he can influence matches against high-level opposition.
However, another strong performance against Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday would make sending Lacey away increasingly difficult to justify.
