The Sacramento Kings are considering a reunion with Russell Westbrook as a means of giving Darius Acuff Jr. a valuable mentor and guidance.
Sacramento's interest in bringing Westbrook back is highly significant, as the Kings believe the competitiveness and habits of the former NBA MVP could leave a lasting impact on their new franchise centerpiece.
"Westbrook averaged 29 minutes in 64 games for the Kings a season ago. Perry said the former league MVP 'outplayed' the minimum contract Sacramento can offer him, so it remains to be seen whether Westbrook would desire a reunion and a presumably smaller role behind Acuff," ESPN's Anthony Slater wrote.
"The Kings, however, value Westbrook's serious, disciplined approach and believe his work habits and mindset could benefit Acuff's growth."
Kings considering Russell Westbrook reunion for Darius Acuff Jr. mentorship
After it was initially reported that they were not necessarily entertaining to run it back with Russell Westbrook, it was revealed that the Sacramento Kings are now considering welcoming him for another season.
Beyond Westbrook, Victor Oladipo is also under consideration by the Kings in their upcoming signing plans to help Darius Acuff Jr.
Still unsigned as a free agent, Westbrook spent the past 2025-26 season as the Kings' floor general. He averaged 15.2 points, 6.7 assists, and 5.4 rebounds across 76 appearances.
Westbrook is widely viewed by his former teammates as one of the league's most supportive and respected professionals, and the Kings believe his toughness and determination could help develop Acuff Jr. into their desired franchise cornerstone.
