Manchester United's women's side had endured a rollercoaster five years under manager Marc Skinner, who left his position by mutual consent.
The highs were impressive, with the club returning to the Women's Champions League and winning the FA Cup, which was the club's first major trophy since its promotion to the Women's Super League (WSL) in 2019.
Despite having a considerably lower budget than the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal, and repeatedly losing big names like Alessia Russa, Ona Battle and, more recently, Melvine Malard, the club has at times fought above its means.
However, a culmination of disappointing tactics from Skinner and the clear lack of investment which has plagued the side has led to the end of the Englishman's five-year reign as boss.
Olid appointed as coach
With a month to go until the WSL begins, Manchester United have appointed Eva Olid after the Spaniard left Hearts this summer following a five-year stay in Scotland. She has signed a two-year contract with the option to extend for another year.
The 40-year-old transformed Hearts from a semi-professional side to not only becoming professional but also Scottish champions last season, showcasing her ability to build a football club from the ground up.
Not only did she win the league, but through developing players, she turned Hearts into goalscoring powerhouses as they topped the goal-scoring charts last season with 85 goals with her 3-4-3 system.
Jess Park and Ella Toone are the obvious beneficiaries of this new system, as it would bring the best out of their attacking flair. But a player who could have serious potential in this team is Elisabeth Terland, who would have no shortage of opportunities to score goals.
Toone is out of contract next year, so being able to convince her of the project and getting the best out of the number seven is paramount.
Olid made her intentions clear in her first media interview with clube where she said: " I know they [the fans] will enjoy watching us play."
Her system had a major emphasis on the goalkeeper playing high up to almost act as a fourth defender, which then allows the club to push up and swamp the opposition to create overloads. Therefore, Pharon Tullis-Joyce's role in the team becomes paramount for this system to work.

Club need to commit properly
This United side no doubt has some really talented players, but this side needs serious development if the club want to bridge the gap between Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal. Skinner previously said as much in March.
After losing the Manchester Derby 3-0, he said (quotes via BBC): "The team are giving absolutely everything they can. It's clear to me that if we get the right investment in the right areas, then we can meet those expectations."
On top of this, Skinner's predecessor, Casey Stoney, left in 2021 due to a lack of investment in everything to do with the side, not just transfers. While it has improved since then, it is clear to see that the club are not operating at the same level in any regard as their rivals.
The club need to give Olid the best possible foundation for her to begin building a project that can bring silverware, the same way she did with Hearts.
