Ex-Man Utd defender Paul Parker claims that signing Fulham midfielder Sander Berge should be a “no-brainer” for his former club.
Speaking to PariuriX.com, Parker said that the Norwegian international has comparable attributes to a former Ballon d’Or winner:
“I have seen that Sander Berge has been mentioned. I like him a lot. He is very steady and plays in a similar way to Rodri, even though he is still far from his level. Sander Berge is a very positive player. Very rarely gives the ball away and he is excellent at controlling the midfield. He is a big guy and everything about him looks great. I totally get why the club might be looking at him.”
“He is always playing games as well. He is never injured, which I really like because it adds some continuity to the team. He was excellent during the World Cup as well, but I am not surprised because he always plays very well. I really like his career path, because he has slowly been making positive moves throughout his career and he has been a focal point at every single club he has been at.”
“I don’t think Manchester United can say no to him. If he wants to join the club, I think it is a no-brainer. You can’t say no to that.”
Berge’s name is on the shortlist of midfield targets
The 28-year-old has been mentioned as a potential option to strengthen Man Utd’s depth in the middle of the park.
The Red Devils are not expected to splash out £60m or £70m on another midfielder, having already signed Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, so Berge has been identified as a cheaper alternative, along with Bournemouth’s Tyler Adams.
Even so, many fans would be underwhelmed if the Norwegian did make the switch to Old Trafford. As Parker says, he may have similar traits to Rodri, but he doesn’t possess the same ability as the Manchester City player.
Man Utd may prioritise a left-back instead
It has been suggested that United may end up using the majority of their remaining transfer budget to reinforce another position.
Luke Shaw is the only recognised left-back in the first team squad, and there is a case to say that finding competition for the 30-year-old is more important than recruiting a third midfielder.
If the Red Devils do pursue a fullback, it is believed they will go after Lewis Hall, but Newcastle’s decision to sell captain Bruno Guimaraes may make any deal for the England international even more difficult to secure.
