Carlos Baleba’s chances of signing for Manchester United now look incredibly slim.
Manchester United are still in the market for a third midfield signing this summer and Carlos Baleba was still on the club’s radar as Michael Carrick needs a ground-eating duel winner.
Last season, United were prepared to bid for Baleba but ultimately walked away from the negotiating table after hearing Brighton’s demands.
It was suggested that United could revisit a deal for Baleba this summer, but David Ornstein has now reported that the 22-year-old is set to miss the start of the 2026/27 season.

Carlos Baleba’s injury record
With United in four competitions next season, Carrick needs players he can rely on week-in, week-out.
Manuel Ugarte has a long-term injury from the World Cup and Youri Tielemans’ injury record is not the best, so midfield availability is a priority.
Unfortunately, Baleba’s latest ankle injury adds to an already patchy record.
As per Premier Injuries, Baleba also suffered three medium-term injuries in 2025, including during pre-season last year.
January 2025 – Baleba out for 2-4 weeks
July 2025 – Baleba knee injury, out for over 4 weeks
March 2026 – Baleba minor injury, out for 1 week

When Baleba missed the majority of Brighton’s pre-season preparations in 2025, what followed was a well below-par season.
Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler admitted Baleba was impacted by transfer rumours.

Baleba ended up dropping out of the Brighton starting XI and was frequently substituted at half-time. United cannot spend big on Baleba if his fresh injury setback risks another underwhelming season.
