Manchester United complete six-figure sale after contract decision
Manchester United have confirmed Gabby George has completed a permanent move to Brighton & Hove Albion, bringing her three-year spell at the club to an end.
George’s departure had been expected after Brighton agreed a deal for the versatile defender earlier this week.
ReadManUtd reported on Wednesday that Brighton were closing in on George, with the Seagulls expected to pay a six-figure fee after United activated the one-year option in her contract in January.
The transfer has now been completed, with George leaving after making 54 appearances for United.
There is some logic behind United’s handling of the situation.
George could have become a free agent this summer before the club exercised their option to extend her deal until 2027. Rather than losing the defender for nothing, United have now been able to secure a transfer fee when it became clear regular football could be difficult to guarantee.
The 29-year-old made 24 appearances last season but faced considerable competition across United’s defence.
Her versatility was valuable, with George capable of operating centrally or at full-back. However, Brighton can now offer the prospect of a more prominent role.
Reuters confirmed George’s move to Brighton on Thursday, with Seagulls head coach Dario Vidosic highlighting her experience, technical quality and ability to play across the back line.
George leaves having also fulfilled a childhood ambition at United.
A lifelong supporter who previously attended the club’s Centre of Excellence, she returned from Everton in 2023 and was part of the squad that lifted the Women’s FA Cup at Wembley the following year.
Her exit adds another decision for new head coach Eva Olid as United continue reshaping the squad before the new WSL campaign.
