How Celtics' Dillon Mitchell Signing Impacts Battle for Final Roster Spot image

Every NBA team knows the value of depth over the course of a long, 82-game season, which means every roster spot is likely to matter at some point.
The Celtics took another step toward finalizing their roster on Wednesday, announcing they have agreed to a two-way contract with second-round pick Dillon Mitchell.
There was some speculation that Mitchell could consider a return to college, if possible, after a ruling opened the door for fifth-year players to gain eligibility this season, but Mitchell shut that door by officially agreeing to an NBA deal.
With Mitchell under contract, joining Amari Williams, the Celtics have only one more two-way roster spot available.
Here's a look at how Mitchell's signing clarifies the battle for the Celtics' final roster spot.
Who could get the Celtics' final roster spot?
NBA teams can carry up to three players on two-way contracts. Mitchell has officially locked down one of those spots and Amari Williams is set to return on a two-way deal as well after working out an agreement in early July.
If the Celtics stay internal for the one remaining spot, there are two clear candidates: PG Milos Uzan and SG Tucker DeVries, who are each set to participate in Celtics training camp on Exhibit 10 deals.
Uzan and DeVries both went undrafted after impressive college careers. Uzan played for the Celtics in the NBA Summer League after finishing his college career at Houston, where he came within one win of a national championship in 2025. DeVries played for his father at Drake, West Virginia and Indiana as an impressive scorer.
The Celtics could always make an external addition and add a free agent if neither rookie earns the final two-way spot, but Uzan and DeVries figure to have a leg up on the competition.
What is a two-way contract?
Free agents with fewer than four years of NBA experience can sign two-way contracts with teams. Two-way contracts allow players to split time between the NBA and the G League. In 2024-25, players on two-way contracts made $636,435 over a full season, and they could be active for no more than 50 of their team's 82 games.
In addition to free agents, second-round picks are also common recipients of two-way deals.
