Following their NBA Finals loss to the New York Knicks, the San Antonio Spurs knew they needed to put in some work to get back. Victor Wembanyama has been at the forefront of this, working out with Hakeem Olajuwon and trying to learn from the legendary center, according to Jared Weiss of The Athletic.

“Wembanyama went off to France after the NBA Finals, signing his contract extension there as he began his offseason training. He then returned to Texas and participated in workouts at Fox’s home gym, with Harris and Barnes included. Wembanyama also spent more time working with Hakeem Olajuwon, who helped him build out his post game last summer,” Weiss wrote.

Wembanyama trained in France to possibly try to get away after the sting of the NBA Finals loss. Notably, he knew there were things to work on. When the world last saw Wembanyama, he was struggling to keep up, or hold a lead, against the Knicks. The goal of working with Olajuwon was to help him with his post game and make him more of a force down low.

Wembanyama worked on his fadeaway and finding ways to direct shots at the basket. Additionally, he has worked to be more consistent with his shots. Advanced defenses learned how to contain the French superstar.

“In the last eight games of the postseason, Wembanyama only hit half of his shots twice. That isn’t completely out of the ordinary for a star player, as Jalen Brunson did the same,” Weiss added.

Wembanyama will look to establish consistency as the season approaches. If he can do that, he will evolve into an even bigger superstar.
