Man Utd scout Giorgio Scalvini as transfer priorities shift
Manchester United have scouted Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini as Michael Carrick’s recruitment plans begin to move towards strengthening the defence.
The Italy international has admirers inside Old Trafford after United’s recruitment team assessed him ahead of a potential move.
The Telegraph’s James Ducker reports that Scalvini has been watched by United and is among the defensive options being considered.
No bid has been reported and there is currently no suggestion that negotiations with Atalanta have begun.
However, the 22-year-old’s versatility could make him particularly attractive as United decide how to use their remaining transfer budget.

Giorgio Scalvini gives Man Utd another option
Scalvini is primarily a centre-back but has also demonstrated an ability to step into defensive midfield.
That could suit Carrick at a time when United are reconsidering whether another major midfield signing is essential following the arrivals of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans.
The club have also increased their focus on defensive reinforcements. ReadManUtd reported on Wednesday that United’s transfer strategy has shifted towards the possibility of signing a left-back, with Lewis Hall and Antonee Robinson among the players being considered.
Scalvini represents a different profile.
His ability to operate in several defensive roles could give Carrick greater flexibility while adding another young player capable of developing at Old Trafford.
Reports suggest Atalanta could consider offers around €40million, approximately £34m, although United have not yet made a formal approach.
Newcastle United and Chelsea have also been linked with Scalvini, so United would be unlikely to have a clear run should their scouting interest develop into something more concrete.
For now, he is another name on the shortlist.
The fact United have already watched him, however, suggests the club are looking beyond their established targets as Carrick shapes the final stage of his summer rebuild.
