Man Utd vs PSG Friendly: Carrick’s Big Pre-Season Test
Pre-season has served up its share of goals and gloss for Manchester United, but Saturday brings the examination Michael Carrick has really been waiting for. The PSG friendly pits the Red Devils against one of Europe’s genuine heavyweights, and for the first time this off-season the standard of opponent matches the ambition of United’s summer. This is the game the Stretford End has circled — a chance to see how far this reshaped squad has come, and how much further it still has to travel.
The fixture with Paris Saint-Germain is the third and biggest marker of United’s pre-season, and it could hardly be better timed. With a return to the Champions League confirmed for 2026-27, Carrick needs to know his new-look side can live with elite opposition before the real business begins. Match PSG, and belief around Old Trafford will swell heading into the campaign. Come off second best, and the questions that have shadowed United for a couple of seasons will resurface just as quickly. Friendlies do not hand out points, but this one carries a psychological weight the summer’s earlier outings did not.
United arrive in form
United could hardly have asked for better preparation. Carrick’s side swept Rosenborg aside 5-0 before edging Atlético Madrid 2-1 on 1 August, Bryan Mbeumo scoring twice — including a penalty — against the Spaniards. Only an early defeat to Wrexham has blotted the copybook. Much of the optimism stems from United’s busy summer transfer window, with Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Šeško, Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos among the fresh faces, and teenage Brazilian Cristian Orozco the latest through the door. Carrick suddenly has choices across the pitch.
What to expect from the PSG friendly
As with any friendly, the team news comes with a health warning. The London Evening Standard has published a predicted XI, but Carrick is all but certain to rotate heavily and share minutes as he manages fitness three weeks out from the opener. Captain Bruno Fernandes will be central to whatever shape United take, while supporters will be watching closely to see how the new signings dovetail. Expect experiments, expect changes at half-time, and do not read too much into the final scoreline.
There will be sub-plots, too. Marcus Rashford’s future remains unsettled this summer, so every touch will be scrutinised, and fringe players know these are the auditions that decide who makes the matchday squad. The official club website has been running the rule over how PSG are shaping up as well. For neutrals it is a glamorous warm-up; for United supporters it is a genuine barometer of where Carrick’s rebuild really stands.
Win, lose or draw, the PSG friendly is about readiness rather than the result. Two more tests follow — Leeds United on 12 August and Milan on 15 August — before United open their Premier League season away at Hull City on 22 August. Carrick will want sharpness, fitness and a clearer sense of his strongest side. For supporters, though, it is simpler: a Saturday against PSG is exactly the kind of glamour tie that gets the pulse racing again. Bring it on.
