The 2026 World Cup shaped how the summer transfer window was set to transpire. Plenty of players earned themselves top moves after performing well at the tournament – England ace Djed Spence could be among them.
Currently at Tottenham Hotspur, Spence has been angling for a move away from North London for several months now. Recently, one of the main contenders to land his signature has seemingly pulled out of the race.
Liverpool have been firmly in the mix to bring Spence on board, but this may no longer be the case according to some recent reports.
According to a post from transfer expert Ben Jacobs on X (formerly Twitter), Liverpool ‘are not currently working’ to bring Spence to Anfield, effectively ruling them out of contention for now.

This could prove to be a massive boost to the other teams looking to sign him at the moment. According to TransferFeed, teams such as Everton, Newcastle United, Roma, Inter Milan and Juventus all want to snap him up. With this news in mind, they may look to push on.
However, the main contenders in the race are Manchester United. As one of the Premier League’s ‘Big Six’ and being one of the biggest clubs in the world, they will naturally be the most attractive option for Spence and his agents.
He wouldn’t be too expensive either. Spurs insider @szyexcl on X believes that he will cost ‘at least’ £35 million. This only sets a minimum on his valuation, but it’s unlikely to be much greater than this.
As things stand, Tottenham are under no pressure to let Spence go. He is under contract at the club until 2029, meaning there is no urgency to move him on as of yet. Furthermore, he hasn’t submitted a transfer request.
Right now, Spence’s future is up in the air. His time at Spurs has been mixed, to say the least. A clean break might be the best result for all parties, but his ultimate destination remains unclear at the moment.

When properly motivated and focused, Spence is a phenomenal player. His timing and tackling is top-notch, as is his work rate and athleticism. He can also back this up with stupendous technical ability, being able to carry the ball down the flank from deep positions.
He’s also very adaptable. While he excels most as an inverted full-back on the left, cutting inside and drifting into the middle of the park, he’s also very comfortable when playing as a traditional right-back.
However, he is prone to inconsistency. We saw far too many lacklustre displays from him for Spurs in the Premier League last season – at times, he appeared as though he didn’t want to be there.
This cannot be allowed to happen if he moves to Manchester United. Michael Carrick is a good man-manager and should be able to circumvent this, but he must be willing to apply himself throughout the campaign.
That aside, United are in need of a top-quality left-back. They have three natural options in that role – Luke Shaw, Harry Amass and Patrick Dorgu – none of whom are up to the required standard.
Spence will not only be able to take on that position, he’ll also be able to give them cover at right-back, too. Additionally, don’t let his meagre goal record fool you – he can be an effective presence in attacking positions.
