This United Attack Has Old Trafford Dreaming Again
There is a sound Old Trafford has been missing for a while: the low hum of genuine excitement about what happens at the top of the pitch. After years of watching the Red Devils misfire in front of goal, this summer has felt different. Walk around the ground before kick-off and the talk is not about who we are selling — it is about how many this United attack might score.
That optimism is not blind. Michael Carrick has been handed a forward line rebuilt almost from scratch, and a pre-season that has mostly delivered. For the first time in seasons, the question around us is an exciting one: not whether we can create chances, but who gets to finish them.
Why this United attack looks reborn
The raw materials are the best they have looked in a long time. Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Šeško and Bryan Mbeumo have joined Joshua Zirkzee and Amad Diallo in Carrick’s attacking options, with captain Bruno Fernandes pulling the strings behind them. That is depth and variety we simply have not had — pace, physicality and creativity in the same forward line.
The early evidence is encouraging. United swept Rosenborg aside 5-0 and then beat Atlético Madrid 2-1 on 1 August, Mbeumo scoring twice including a penalty. Only a surprise defeat to Wrexham has blotted the copybook. Nobody is pretending friendlies win anything, but sharp, hungry attacking play in July tends to carry into August.
The neutrals are buying into this United attack too
It is not just supporters getting carried away. Goal.com have been glowing about the summer business, even asking whether Tielemans could be the signing of the season, while talkSPORT have tipped one of United’s forwards for a 15-goal campaign after the club’s summer transformation. Those are outsiders’ opinions rather than promises, and pre-season goals count for nothing once the real football starts — but it is a long time since the outside noise around United has been this positive.
Saturday’s friendly with Paris Saint-Germain is the first proper examination. Beat a side of that calibre and the belief hardens; come off second best and the doubts return quickly. Then comes the Premier League opener away at Hull City on 22 August and, further ahead, a long-awaited return to the Champions League.
You can track United’s busy summer transfer window alongside the football, but for one weekend, allow yourself the daydream. After everything the last few years have thrown at us, this United attack has earned a little hope.
