Manchester United’s pursuit of Lewis Hall could be one of the biggest transfer stories to watch before the summer window closes, but Newcastle United are showing little sign of changing their stance.
The Athletic’s David Ornstein has delivered the latest update on the situation, suggesting Manchester United’s admiration for the England international remains genuine but that completing a deal will be extremely difficult.
“I don’t expect [him] to be coming to Manchester United,” Ornstein said. “There’s clearly some interest, but Newcastle will be determined to keep a hold of him, probably even more so following the departure of Eddie Howe, and let’s see that they would even like to tie him down to a new contract.”
Ornstein’s comments come as Manchester United continue prioritizing a new left-back after strengthening their midfield with the additions of Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos.
According to The Athletic, Lewis Hall is “well liked” internally at Old Trafford, but Newcastle are “privately insisting” the 21-year-old won’t be sold after already seeing Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali, and Bruno Guimaraes depart.
That hasn’t stopped speculation from the Manchester side, who are willing to pony up £60 million to try and snatch the youngster from Tyneside.
According to talkSPORT’s Alex Crook, United are prepared to test Newcastle’s resolve with a significant offer.
“Manchester United are willing to pay up to £60 million for Lewis Hall,” Crook said, adding that Harry Amass is expected to leave on loan after impressing during pre-season, while Fulham defender Antonee Robinson is viewed as a cheaper alternative if a move for Hall proves impossible.
Hall remains under contract at St. James’ Park until 2029, giving Newcastle a strong negotiating position. The England international appeared in 45 games last season across all club and international competitions, scoring one goal and assisting on two more.
With the Magpies already losing several key figures this summer, the club appears determined to ensure one of its brightest young stars is not part of the ongoing exodus.
