Cristian Orozco has officially signed for Manchester United – so how can he progress into the first team?

There are high hopes for Cristian Orozco at Manchester United, but there is also good reason to be measured too.

Orozco, 18, has captained Colombia at youth level and played first team football for former club Fortaleza.

He has joined up with United’s under-21 team and will play academy football while he adjusts to life in England on and off the pitch.

United’s recent signings from abroad, Sekou Kone and Diego Leon are yet to make their first team debuts, so this certainly tempers expectations.

However, there is an achievable path for Orozco at United if he impresses for the under-21s.

Orozco’s competition is thinning

It was telling that Cristian Orozco went into United’s under-21 side upon his arrival rather than being thrust into the first team spotlight.

At the start of pre-season there was a proliferation of young players blocking his path to even get a look in for the first team in midfield.

Tyler Fletcher

Jack Fletcher

Dan Gore

Toby Collyer

Jacob Devaney

Jim Thwaites

And that is in addition to the first team options.

United are expected to but not guaranteed to sign a fifth first team centre-midfielder.

This could limit the opportunities for a young player to break into the team, but it would not block their path entirely.

If a young player was called upon, Orozco has a real chance to put himself in the mix if he can consistently impress for the under-21s.

His competition at academy level is thinning out.

In addition, Jack Fletcher has been used as a winger in training sessions and could end up being removed from the equation.

Orozco may be more physically ready than Jim Thwaites too, so there is a real chance that he ends up getting fast-tracked into the team.

Sekou Kone is also out on loan at Lausanne. This 2026/27 season might end up being a real chance for Orozco to make his mark – even if it takes until the second half of the campaign.

How Kobbie Mainoo broke through

Kobbie Mainoo made his first team breakthrough proper in 2023/24, although did make his debut the previous season.

Mainoo suffered an injury in 2023 pre-season that delayed his impact, but it could not hold him back.

When Mainoo broke into the team, there was also a list of players in his path.

Despite this list of accomplished first team players, Mainoo was able to make his mark and establish himself as a critical player in the squad.

United’s current options, Mainoo included, could still leave room for Orozco if he can impress the coaching staff.
