Garrison Mathews is set to join Olimpia Milano for his first European stint following a stint with the Atlanta Hawks. While bureaucratic issues have delayed the official signing, the sharpshooter expressed excitement about reuniting with high school rival Darius Thompson and eyes an eventual return to the NBA.
Garrison Mathews is preparing for his first season in Europe.
Due to certain bureaucratic issues, his signing isn't official as of now and he is yet to fly to Italy, but everything is pretty much agreed.
Mathews even gave his first interview to the local press in Milano, talking about his expectations:
"I'm thrilled about the opportunity. I never thought I'd play abroad, but I've received a couple of calls with important offers that were too hard to refuse," Mathews admitted.
"I started very well in Atlanta, then I ended up on the bench for the last two months. It was tough. In the end, it didn't work out. My goal is to have a good season and then, hopefully, get the opportunity to play there [NBA] again."
Mathews recalled his connection with Darius Thompson, as his future teammate played against him in high school:
"In the last few months, I've started missing the game. I'm just happy to be back playing basketball." In Milan, he'll be reunited with Darius Thompson, a Murfreesboro native and Blackman High School graduate:
"I remember him beating me in high school, can't wait to play with him and everyone else. I think it'll be a good thing," he concluded
