Earlier today, Spanish side Celta Vigo officially announced the signing of goalkeeper Altay Bayindir from Manchester United.
Altay Bayindir arrived at Manchester United in 2023 hoping to eventually establish himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.
That opportunity never truly arrived.
The Turkiye international spent much of his Old Trafford career as a back-up and struggled to build any real momentum.
However, Bayindir still gave United supporters one memorable afternoon during the club’s FA Cup win over Arsenal in January 2025.
He saved Martin Odegaard’s penalty during normal time before denying Kai Havertz in the shootout as ten-man United progressed at the Emirates.
Despite that display, regular football remained difficult to come by.
Last season briefly looked like it could change things.
However, he did not look comfortable.
Bayindir started the campaign in goal after Andre Onana dropped out of the picture, but Senne Lammens quickly established himself as United’s new number one.
The summer arrival of Karl Darlow then pushed Bayindir even further down the pecking order.
Celta Vigo have since officially signed the 28-year-old on loan for the 2026/27 season, with an option to buy included in the agreement.
United add important condition to Bayindir transfer
According to journalist Sercan Hamzaoglu on X, Bayindir’s agreement with Celta Vigo included a special clause concerning regular playing time.
The precise mechanics of the clause were not disclosed.
However, the condition appears designed to give Altay Bayindir a stronger opportunity to feature consistently during his spell in Spain.
Hamzaoglu also reports that the goalkeeper received approaches from around seven or eight clubs across Europe during the transfer window.
Interest reportedly arrived from England, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands.
Premier League clubs even attempted to enter the race.
However, Celta presented Bayindir with what he considered the strongest sporting project after pursuing him for an extended period.
Regular football was clearly a major factor in his decision.
After three seasons largely spent waiting for opportunities at United, the special clause could now prove crucial as Bayindir attempt to properly re-establish himself as a first-choice goalkeeper.
