Manchester United have made no secret of their admiration for promising left-back Lewis Hall, but they could pull the plug on a deal due to Newcastle’s asking price.
The Reds have signed four players so far this summer: Andrey Santos (£48m), Karl Darlow (free), Youri Tielemans (£35m) and Tynan Thompson (£8m).
Yet there are still gaping holes in Michael Carrick’s team, especially in midfield and attack – but Manchester United must also ensure they have sufficient cover at left-back ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
United have been heavily linked with a move for Newcastle star Lewis Hall, but the Magpies will not make it easy for any potential suitors as they want to keep the England international at St James’ Park.

Bruno Guimarães is on the verge of becoming the latest player to leave Newcastle in what has been a turbulent summer for the club.
After selling Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali earlier this summer, Eddie Howe walked away from his role as manager.
Hall is another player who could leave the sinking ship at St James’ Park, but Newcastle are not going to let him go easily after losing three key players and their manager.
Only time will tell if Hall plans to force a move to Old Trafford, but United could also reevaluate the situation at left-back next year if Carrick is willing to put more faith in Harry Amass.
Hall will have two years left to run on his Newcastle contract next season, and a £60m deal may look more appealing to the Magpies during a summer that doesn’t include a wholesale of star players
The United academy graduate has come through the academy and was highly thought of in the Championship before picking up an injury on loan at Norwich City. I’m not saying this guarantees anything. It doesn’t, but ditching Amass for someone more experienced isn’t necessarily the best option either, unless it is Hall, a player viewed as a long-term option for the left-back role.
Signing Hall could be reminiscent of the deal that saw United sign Shaw from Southampton for £27m in 2014, which is why it could be worth waiting for.
That would also give United a chance to see Amass in the first team throughout the 2026/27 campaign. Shaw would remain the primary option, as he would if Hall signed, initially at least, but he cannot be expected to play every game in every competition.
In turn, United could use the money they were planning to spend on Hall by acquiring a new striker and another midfielder.
The club must decide what positions take priority in the closing weeks of the transfer window.

However, if Amass does get a run of games in the first team under Carrick, I don’t think it would do his market value any harm.
United could pocket a bigger deal than the £6m touted by multiple outlets this summer. I think that would be music to Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s ears.
