The NBA has no shortage of compelling storylines after one of the more hectic offseasons in recent memory. From championship contenders to newly formed teams, there are countless marquee matchups worthy of the national spotlight. Here are the five best opening night matchups the NBA should consider for the 2026-27 season.

After the Boston Celtics traded away their Finals MVP, Jaylen Brown, tensions between him and his former team became high, making this one of the NBA’s biggest storylines of the offseason. Bringing back Brown to Boston would add more drama to this NBA season.
This would give him the chance to prove why the Celtics made a mistake by trading him. This game would become personal for Brown as he is now a visitor on his former team. However, this would be a chance to show his former teammates why he should still be there.
On the flip side, there is more pressure surrounding the Celtics in this game. Now that Jayson Tatum is expected to be healthy, it is up to him to respond with a monster game in order for him to gain trust from the fans and show why he was always the Celtics’ best option.
Both Hugo Gonzalez and Baylor Scheierman’s names were thrown around as possible pieces a part of this package. The pressure will be on them to prove why Brad Stevens is doubling down on his young players to be instant contributors.

The new duo of LaMelo Ball and Anthony Edwards is arguably one of the most exciting backcourts in the NBA. The Los Angeles Lakers also enter this season with a fresh new look. With LeBron James’s departure, Luka Doncic now has a squad built around his strengths. Pairing Giannis with Bam Adebayo gives Miami two of the league’s most versatile defenders while also creating a dangerous transition attack. Bam’s playmaking ability should also create easy scoring opportunities for Giannis, making the duo one of the most dynamic frontcourts in the NBA.
Many people around the league believed that LeBron James would return to Miami, where he would reunite with former coach Erik Spoelstra. Instead, he decided to join the Philadelphia 76ers, instantly transforming Philly into one of the most dangerous offensive units in the league. Facing the Heat on opening night adds more fuel to the fire.
James would take the court against a franchise that many expected him to rejoin. The matchup would also feature LeBron facing Spoelstra for the first time since passing on a Miami reunion. A potential Opening Night matchup would showcase one of the NBA’s elite defensive teams against one of its most explosive offenses.

After defeating the defending champions, the San Antonio Spurs are now the team to beat in the West. However, after a disastrous finals performance, San Antonio enters the season with unfinished business to handle. With improved chemistry and experience, the young core will be a force to be reckoned with in the league.
The Oklahoma City Thunder fell short of repeating as champions after injuries derailed their playoff run. With Jalen Williams and Ajay Mitchell healthy, OKC will be eager to show the basketball world that last year’s disappointing run was a small setback. A Spurs rematch would instantly reignite one of the NBA’s newest rivalries and serve as an early test for the West’s top contenders.

To no NBA fan’s surprise, the Knicks will be taking the floor regardless on Opening Night. However, the most compelling matchup for them will be against the Sixers. The New York Knicks enter this season with even more to prove. They were able to retain nearly all of their core besides Mitchell Robinson, and by adding Andre Drummond, this team will be in contention to win the NBA Finals again. As for the Knicks, there may not be a more compelling opening night opponent than the 76ers.
Philadelphia transformed itself into an Eastern Conference powerhouse by adding both LeBron James and Jaylen Brown to a core that already featured Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, instantly becoming one of the league’s biggest championship threats. This move also made the Sixers one of the NBA’s more favorite teams to watch this upcoming year.
This most likely will be LeBron’s final stop and Philly’s hopes of bringing home a championship. A sold-out Madison Square Garden for the Knicks’ ring ceremony would make this one of opening night’s most memorable games.
