Botafogo are one of the biggest clubs in Brazil and they have just announced the signing of a former Manchester United defender until 2028.
Botafogo are one of the biggest and most historic clubs in Brazilian football, and another piece of business has now been completed.
The Rio de Janeiro giants have been home to some of Brazil’s greatest-ever players, including Garrincha and Nilton Santos.
Meanwhile, their modern history has also delivered major success.
Botafogo enjoyed a remarkable 2024 campaign, winning the Brazilian title and lifting the Copa Libertadores for the first time in their history.
There has also been another Brazilian connection with Manchester United this summer.
Michael Carrick’s side completed the signing of Andrey Santos from Chelsea, with the midfielder having started his career at Vasco de Gama before moving to Europe.
Now, another piece of business involving a player with strong United connections has been officially completed in Brazil.
Botafogo have officially confirmed that Alex Telles has signed a new contract which would keep him at the club until the end of 2028.
The 33-year-old is already captain of the Brazilian giants and has reached 100 appearances for the club.
Telles originally joined Botafogo in 2024 after leaving Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr.
He previously spent three years on Manchester United’s books after arriving from Porto in 2020, making 50 appearances before eventually departing for Saudi Arabia.
Despite being seen as an attacking left-back, Telles only provided seven assists for the Red Devils.
His time since returning to Brazil has proved considerably more successful.
Telles helped Botafogo complete their historic Brasileirao and Copa Libertadores double in 2024.
He even scored from the penalty spot in the Libertadores final against Atletico Mineiro.
Botafogo desribed their captain as a leader and an idol among supporters when announcing the agreement.
What started as a return to Brazilian football two years ago has now become a long-term commitment, with the former Manchester United full-back staying until 2028.
