Gary Neville gave a glowing verdict of Djed Spence during the World Cup, which means the former Manchester United captain is likely in favour of seeing the Tottenham Hotspur full-back linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Manchester United and Liverpool have been offered the chance to sign Tottenham defender Djed Spence, according to Ben Jacobs (via The United Stand).

Spence, who starred for England at the 2026 World Cup, has spent just two full seasons at Tottenham, having signed in a deal worth £20 million from Middlesbrough in 2022.

It was previously documented that Spence is a United fan, but it remains to be seen if the Red Devils are interested in signing the full-back, who is comfortable on both flanks rather than a master of one.

Gary Neville rates Djed Spence

Spence, 25, was one of England’s standout performers at the World Cup this summer.

United are in the market for a new left back, but Spence has shown impressive versatility on both flanks for Tottenham and England.

Former United captain Gary Neville sang Spence’s praises during the World Cup, saying (via The Metro): “I think Spence is someone again who will play a big part in this tournament, whether it’s right-back or left-back, because I think he’s like a leech when he defends. He’s very aggressive in his work and he’s got a great tenacity about him.

“Spence also went forward very well when he came on and nearly scored, so I do think there will be some tweaks in the defence.”

This suggests that Neville would welcome the addition of Spence at United, but there is nothing to suggest the club view him as an alternative target to Lewis Hall.

Hall has been United’s primary target for the role at left-back. A move may be considered difficult now Newcastle are on the verge of losing Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal.

Michael Carrick could also give Harry Amass a chance to challenge Luke Shaw at left-back next season.

Shaw played every game in the Premier League last season, though it would be a risk to expect him to replicate that again with Champions League football thrown into the mix.
