Man Utd and Liverpool are among the clubs that have been “offered” Tottenham fullback Djed Spence, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.
Speaking on The United Stand YouTube channel, Jacobs said the England international, who played in his country’s World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina last month, is keen on leaving Spurs to play regular first-team football:
“Djed Spence is a name on the player side that’s being offered around. He’s been offered to Liverpool. He’s been offered to Manchester United. I’m not aware yet whether the clubs are interested in that deal, but Spence wants to go somewhere and play week in, week out, whether it’s on the right or whether it’s on the left, so his future more broadly might be one to watch.”
“Again, I don’t think Man United at this point have said, ‘We want Djed Spence. We’re going to move for Djed Spence. We’re going to negotiate for Djed Spence.’ But the Spence side are offering him around to Premier League clubs because, with Pedro Porro on one side and Destiny Udogie on the other, and after a very positive World Cup, Spence can’t guarantee he’s going to be playing every week at Tottenham Hotspur. And that’s why he’s assessing his options even though Roberto De Zerbi would love to keep him as a squad player.”
Should Man Utd sign Spence?
While the 25-year-old has performed well as a left-back over the last twelve months for both club and country, it has to be pointed out that he is right-footed.
Spence won’t give any natural width on the left flank, which would be similar to when Diogo Dalot or Noussair Mazraoui are asked to play there.
You only have to look at his stats for Tottenham as evidence that he isn’t much of an attacking outlet when playing as a left-back. He scored 0 goals and provided 0 assists last campaign.
Is a move for Lewis Hall still possible?
Like many other journalists, Jacobs emphasised that the Newcastle defender remains the “dream target” to provide competition for Luke Shaw.
However, the chances of Hall moving to Old Trafford look increasingly unlikely, with the Magpies expected to close the door on any further outgoings following the departure of captain Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal.
