Manchester United midfield faces first elite test against PSG
Manchester United’s midfield changes will face their toughest examination in pre-season against Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday as Michael Carrick begins integrating Youri Tielemans into his rebuilt side.
United have already added Tielemans and Andrey Santos this summer, giving Carrick two very different midfield options after reshaping an area of the squad that required significant work.
The early signs have been encouraging. Santos has gained valuable minutes throughout pre-season, while Tielemans is now in contention to make his debut against the reigning European champions.

That combination would give Carrick an important first look at how his new midfield handles a significant increase in quality.
Manchester United midfield must show it can control games
United’s 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid provided encouragement.
Carrick’s side recovered from an early setback, pressed effectively and eventually won through Bryan Mbeumo’s two second-half goals.
PSG should demand something different.
Even during pre-season, Luis Enrique’s side are accustomed to controlling possession, rotating positions and forcing opponents to make decisions under pressure.
That is precisely the environment in which Santos and Tielemans need to be assessed.
Santos offers energy and defensive aggression. Tielemans brings greater experience in possession and the ability to play through pressure.
United signed the Belgian for around £35million partly because Carrick wanted another midfielder capable of controlling the tempo rather than simply competing physically.

The question is whether the midfield structure survives when United spend longer periods without the ball.
Against weaker opposition, mistakes can disappear.
Against elite European sides, a poor touch or badly timed press can immediately expose the defence.
Tielemans can change how Carrick uses Fernandes
Fernandes’ return adds another layer.
United’s captain has often been required to drop deeper to help progress possession, particularly when opponents press aggressively.
A functioning Santos-Tielemans partnership could reduce that responsibility.
Tielemans can receive from the defenders and find forward passes, while Santos has the mobility to cover ground around him. That would allow Fernandes to remain closer to the forwards and influence attacks from positions where he is most dangerous.
Manchester United’s official PSG information confirms Fernandes, Tielemans, Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui are among the senior players back in the travelling group.
Carrick does not need the midfield to look finished in Gothenburg.
Tielemans has only recently returned from World Cup duty and may require time before reaching full sharpness.
What United do need is evidence that the balance works.
Santos cannot be asked to cover every transition. Tielemans cannot be left isolated when PSG increase the tempo. Fernandes must still contribute without being dragged so deep that United lose their attacking threat.
Those relationships will matter once Champions League football returns to Old Trafford.
Saturday’s match kicks off at 4pm BST and United still have friendlies against Leeds United and AC Milan to come. talkSPORT’s match guide also identifies PSG as Carrick’s most demanding pre-season opponent so far.
There will be more opportunities to make adjustments.
But after spending heavily to rebuild the middle of the pitch, PSG offer the first real indication of whether Manchester United’s new midfield is capable of standing up to the level Carrick wants his side to reach.
