After an encouraging start to pre-season, some began to question whether Mount could effectively fulfil the role many expected a third summer midfield signing to occupy.
Relying on Mount always carried risk, given his persistent fitness struggles since joining from Chelsea.
Speaking to local media in Gothenburg following United’s 1-1 draw against PSG, Carrick confirmed Mount picked up a knock to the foot before being taken off as a precaution.
He said: “He got kicked. We just wanted to be careful and look after him. We’ve been lucky with injuries so far, so we wanted to be careful.”
It remains unclear whether Mount will travel to Dublin for Wednesday’s friendly against Leeds or return to Carrington for a diagnosis on the injury.
United fans will be hoping for good news, as a fully fit Mount could still be an invaluable asset in midfield this season.
