Michael Carrick was quick to downplay Mason Mount injury concerns following Manchester United's 1-1 draw with Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday. The Red Devils met the Ligue 1 champions in Gothenburg in a pre-season friendly, eager to pump minutes into the legs of first-team players ahead of the Premier League's return later this month.
While Mount was given the nod to start the encounter by Carrick, the attacking-midfielder lasted less than 20 minutes before he appeared to pull up on the pitch. The 27-year-old was spotted hobbling off the pitch as he was swapped out for Tyler Fletcher, before having a lengthy discussion with medical staff.
Mount then headed down the tunnel for further evaluation, as United fans feared yet another spell on the side-lines for the Englishman, who has been plagued with injury since his arrival from Chelsea in 2023. However, Carrick confirmed in the aftermath of the match that it was just a precautionary measure taken by management.
He told the media: "He got kicked. We just wanted to be careful and look after him. We’ve been lucky with injuries so far, so we wanted to be careful."
Mount has managed just 54 Premier League appearances from a possible 114 as a result of various issues since his arrival from Stamford Bridge. However, the midfielder will be hoping for a season of plain sailing as united prepare to juggle domestic duties with Champions League football.
The Red Devils have just two pre-season clashes remaining ahead of their Premier League curtain-raiser with a newly-promoted Hull City come August 22. United will next take on Leeds United on Wednesday, August 12 before facing AC Milan three days later.
It has been a fruitful summer at Old Trafford, with United bolstering their engine room in particular following the departure of Casemiro as a free agent.

The club have enlisted the services of Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos from Aston Villa and Chelsea respectively thus far, although there are rumours of a third arrival on the horizon.
United are thought to be monitoring the situation of AS Monaco's Lamine Camara at present, although with the 22-year-old under contract until 2029, negotiations could be difficult.
Other options include Everton's Iliman Ndiaye and Real Madrid's Aurelien Tchouameni, although any hopes of successfully securing the latter seem slim to none.

Los Blancos were thought to be willing to allow the Frenchman to move on this summer, as a result of a hopeful pursuit of Manchester City's Rodri.
But with the Spaniard now seemingly making his way to Barcelona instead, Real may need to cling onto Tchouameni for the season ahead.
