United’s PSG Verdict: Three Things We Learned in Gothenburg
There are worse ways to spend a summer Saturday than watching United go toe to toe with the European champions and refuse to blink. Our PSG verdict, after a battling 1-1 draw in Gothenburg, is that this was exactly the kind of examination Michael Carrick wanted. A goal down inside two minutes to Ibrahim Mbaye, the Red Devils could have folded against Paris Saint-Germain. Instead they dug in, found a way back through Bryan Mbeumo, and gave a much-changed side a proper test of their nerve.
Pre-season friendlies are not the finished article and nobody at Old Trafford will pretend otherwise. But with the Premier League opener at Hull City now a fortnight away, and a return to the Champions League to prepare for, this was a night that told us plenty about where Carrick’s rebuild stands. Here are the three things we took from it.
First up in our PSG verdict: Mbeumo means business
If pre-season is about finding rhythm, Bryan Mbeumo is already there. His 32nd-minute equaliser against PSG followed the brace he struck in the 2-1 win over Atlético Madrid, and there is a sharpness to his movement that United have lacked in the final third for far too long. As the Guardian reported, he might even have had a second but for the form of PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov. For a forward still settling into a new club, this is the best possible start — and a reminder of why the club moved for him.
Amad Diallo is the spark
The goal did not come from nowhere. It was Amad Diallo, all energy and mischief, who won the ball back high up the pitch and slipped Mbeumo in for the leveller. That is the version of Amad that lit up the back end of last season, and against a side of PSG’s calibre it mattered. If United are going to punch above expectations this term, they need their creators biting into games like this one. On this evidence, Amad is ready to carry a chunk of that burden.
The injuries are the real worry
Now the sobering part. Mason Mount lasted fewer than 20 minutes before a foot problem forced him off, replaced by Tyler Fletcher, and 40-year-old goalkeeper Tom Heaton then pulled up with a hamstring issue early in the second half. Two knocks in one friendly is the last thing a squad wants a fortnight out from Hull City, and Mount’s fitness record makes his latest setback especially frustrating. We should not catastrophise a pre-season night, but a thin, still-settling squad cannot afford a treatment room that fills up before a ball has been kicked in anger.
So where does that leave us? Encouraged, mostly. There was real promise in the way captain Bruno Fernandes linked with new arrival Youri Tielemans, plenty of fight against elite opposition, and a forward line that looks like it will score goals. With friendlies against Leeds United and Milan still to come, the fitness of Mount and Heaton is the one cloud over an otherwise bright night.
