After the trade to the Toronto Raptors was announced in the early days of free agency, Kawhi Leonard appeared free and clear of last year’s scandal. However, while suspicion regarding the investigation held up the deal, recent developments may point toward more negative outcomes.
The initial investigation into the Clippers‘ attempts to circumvent the salary cap with Kawhi Leonard’s contract seemed to be in its final stages, with virtually no major backlash. Still, after Pablo Torre recently unveiled Leonard’s deal with the team’s scoreboard maker, more doubts arose. While this could undoubtedly sway the overall probe, a resurfaced report by The Athletic’s Sam Amick may prove more concerning.
Leonard was notably engaged in talks with the Los Angeles Lakers during the 2019 free agency period before eventually signing with the Clippers. Although a move to the Lakers appeared plausible, Amick revealed the demands made by Leonard’s representation and why it forced Los Angeles to walk away from the deal. He wrote:
“The stories about Robertson’s wish list made their way to the league office soon after Leonard made his decision, with concerned parties reporting that Leonard’s uncle had asked pursuing teams for much, much more than a max contract.”
“Sources say the league was told that Robertson asked team officials for part ownership of the team, a private plane that would be available at all times, a house, and last, but certainly not least, a guaranteed amount of off-court endorsement money that they could expect if Leonard played for their team. All of those items, to be clear, would fall well outside the confines of the league’s collective bargaining agreement.”
It is well-known that Kawhi Leonard’s uncle, Dennis Robertson, has played a vital role in contract negotiations. Unfortunately, Robertson’s personal demands may have put the superstar in jeopardy.
With Amick’s report clearly depicting a pattern of attempts at violating the CBA, the narrative surrounding Leonard is bound to shift. While this may not directly affect the investigation into the scandal involving the Clippers, it certainly presents the situation in a new light.
What Does This Imply For Kawhi Leonard’s Future?
At the current juncture, Kawhi Leonard is suspended in limbo. Although his trade to the Toronto Raptors was widely celebrated, with former teammate Kyle Lowry even hinting at championship aspirations for the team during his retirement speech, Toronto’s hesitation to complete the deal leaves the superstar in an odd place.
The worst-case scenario would see Leonard’s contract voided, effectively nullifying the trade. While the Raptors wouldn’t suffer any losses, primarily because the deal hasn’t been completed, this would leave the Clippers in an extremely vulnerable situation.
Alternatively, recent updates suggest that the implications of the investigation could be relatively lighter, with a “negotiated settlement” emerging as the likely outcome. The settlement would involve a lighter punishment on both the Clippers and Leonard, but it would allow the superstar to play for the Raptors. Needless to say, Toronto would also view this decision favorably.
Until there is an official announcement, everything remains speculative. However, given how long this investigation has dragged on (and is expected to drag on) and the eventual outcome, the damage to Kawhi Leonard’s legacy is undeniable.
