The NBA was struck by tragedy earlier today as legendary head coach Don Nelson passed away at the age of 86. After a phenomenal career as a player and a head coach, earning him a place in the Hall of Fame, Nelson left behind one of the most memorable legacies in league history.
Having served as an NBA head coach since the 1976-77 season (Milwaukee Bucks), Don Nelson undoubtedly impacted the careers of several players. However, it was during his tenure with the Dallas Mavericks that Nelson probably left his biggest mark.
Having coached franchise legend Dirk Nowitzki, sowing the seeds for Dallas’ eventual title-winning season years later, Nelson was closely involved with the Mavericks. Hence, in light of his passing, both Nowitzki and Luka Doncic shared heartfelt messages to honor Don Nelson’s legacy.
Dirk Nowitzki shared a sentimental note for his former coach, stating:
“Nellie… You didn’t just draft me. You believed in me. You saw things in my game before I ever realized I could do them. I’ve said it a million times, and I will always say it: I don’t think my career could have turned out how it did without you being my first coach and giving me the freedom to play my game. I can only say thank you. For everything. RIP legend.”
While remembering Nelson, Luka Doncic wrote:
“It’s a sad day for basketball with the passing of Don Nelson. I have so much respect for him and everything he did for the game, especially the way he believed in international players. I’m grateful for the time I spent with him. Thinking of the entire Nelson family today. I loved getting to know you, Coach.”
Since Don Nelson coached the Mavericks from 1997 to 2005, Luka Doncic never had the opportunity to play under the Hall of Famer. Despite this, it is clear that Doncic held him in high regard.
Aside from Doncic and Nowitzki, former Mavericks owner Mark Cuban also shared a short note on X, tweeting “RIP Nellie” in memory of the Hall of Fame head coach. Although Cuban bought the franchise a few years into Nelson’s tenure, the two certainly shared a close relationship.
Don Nelson’s tenure with the Mavericks was nothing short of iconic. In eight seasons as head coach, Nelson posted a 339-251 record in the regular season, along with a 43-19 record in the playoffs. Although he came up short of winning the title in Dallas as head coach, he was instrumental in laying the foundation for the franchise’s future success.
Other Noteworthy Figures React To Don Nelson’s Death
In a career spanning over 30 years, Nelson served as head coach for four teams, namely: the Milwaukee Bucks (11 years), the Golden State Warriors (11 years), the New York Knicks (1 year), and the Dallas Mavericks (8 years). While Don Nelson was a pivotal figure with the Mavericks, he also carved out a notable legacy with other franchises.
Don Nelson affected the lives of many. Hence, upon his passing, several poured in to share their condolences and words of gratitude.
Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry was among the first to share a message on his social media, as he wrote:
“My first coach in the NBA. One of the greatest minds in the game and pushed the way it was played!! NellyBall was a real thing. Gave me the opportunity to find myself in ’09. Forever grateful. RIP Coach.”
During his second stint with the Warriors, Nelson had the opportunity to nurture Stephen Curry’s talent in his rookie season. Although the head coach left shortly after the 2009-10 season ended, he played a vital role in the early days of Curry’s career.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver also shared a statement acknowledging the passing of the Hall of Fame head coach, sharing:
“Don Nelson revolutionized NBA basketball through his fearlessness, ingenuity, and deep conviction. He spent nearly 50 years in the NBA, winning five championships as a player with the Boston Celtics before building one of the most successful and pioneering coaching careers in league history. He brought an unmistakable personality to everything he did, and his impact on our sport will continue to be felt for generations. I send my deepest condolences to Don’s family and many friends throughout our league.”
Aside from Silver and Curry, former Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd and Nelson’s contemporary, former NBA head coach George Karl, also shared sincere messages in light of his passing. Kidd wrote:
“We lost one of the legends of the game today. Don Nelson was a great player, a coaching genius, and a great person. He will truly be missed by all those who had the pleasure of knowing him and being impacted by his one-of-a-kind wisdom. May he rest in peace.”
Meanwhile, Karl, who spent a large portion of his career competing against Don Nelson, commented:
“Hit ’em long and straight, my friend. RIP Nellie.”
Having won five championships as a player with the Boston Celtics and innumerable accolades earned as a head coach, Don Nelson’s legacy can never be overlooked. With many crediting him as one of the most influential individuals in league history, Nelson was a true pioneer and a bona fide legend of the sport.
