Warriors legend Steph Curry gets major update on future with Golden State going into season image
The Golden State Warriors have had a rough summer in terms of adding players who can help turn the team into a championship contender. After LeBron James signed with the Philadelphia 76ers, the Warriors have primarily brought back familiar faces who are more suited for supporting roles.
That has left many fans frustrated with the organization as Steph Curry enters the latter stages of his career. ESPN’s Kendrick Perkins even urged Curry to start thinking about an exit strategy.
“Steph needs to be planning his exit strategy from the Golden State Warriors," said Perkins on 'NBA Today'. "Think about it, over the last four years, the Warriors have been in the play-in tournament. And this year, the way that the West is stacked up, they're gonna be a play-in tournament team again. You can't waste any more time hoping and banking that Mike Dunleavy is gonna get it right or is gonna make the moves that are needed to make sure that you can compete for a title, especially in a tough Western Conference.
However, Curry has the opportunity to sign an extension before the start of the season.
“What the terms of a new extension look like for Curry will be completely up to him, as the Warriors are prepared to offer their star whatever he wants. If Steph wants the full $136.7 million through the 2028-29 season, he will get that. If he wants to take a discount to help the team, GM Mike Dunleavy Jr. will have no problem with said deal," ClutchPoints' Brett Siegel wrote.
Curry’s name has also come up in trade rumors and speculation. There has been talk about the possibility of Curry requesting a trade, but Siegel recently reported that the Warriors star will remain in Golden State.
“Steph Curry is not going to be requesting a trade,” Siegel said on the Clutch Scoops podcast. “We have that on extremely good authority from the Warriors that Steph Curry is staying there. He wants to remain there his entire career.”
This is good news for Warriors fans who may have hit the panic button. However, it also shows just how important Curry’s loyalty is to him, especially if Golden State is unlikely to have a true championship-contending roster in the near future.
Curry has completely changed the outlook of the Warriors organization, especially during the team’s dynasty era. The four-time NBA champion appears committed to sticking it out in the Bay Area until he decides it is time to announce his retirement.
