Celtics Predicted To Lose Bradley Beal Sweepstakes To Eastern Conference Rival image

The Boston Celtics could miss out on one of the most accomplished players remaining in NBA free agency. Boston and the Miami Heat reportedly have expressed interest in signing three-time All-Star Bradley Beal to a veteran minimum contract. Bleacher Report’s Dan Favale predicted that Miami ultimately will win the competition for the 14-year veteran.
That outcome would sting for the Celtics on two fronts. Boston would lose a potential source of bench scoring while watching Beal join an Eastern Conference rival attempting to build a championship contender around Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo.
Beal is not the superstar who once averaged more than 30 points per game for the Washington Wizards. At the right price, however, he could become one of the more intriguing low-risk additions of the offseason.
Heat Could Offer Bradley Beal Larger Role
Beal’s market has been difficult to evaluate because of his recent injury history. The 33-year-old appeared in only six games for the Los Angeles Clippers last season before suffering a fracture in his left hip that required season-ending surgery. He averaged career lows of 8.2 points and 20.2 minutes while shooting 37.5% from the field.
Beal later declined his $5.6 million player option and entered unrestricted free agency. NBA reporter Evan Sidery identified Boston and Miami as teams that recently showed interest in signing Beal for the minimum. Beal reportedly wants to spend the final stage of his career with a championship contender.
Both organizations meet that requirement, but Miami may be able to present him with a clearer role. The Heat need another shooter around Antetokounmpo and Adebayo. Beal could receive regular opportunities to handle the ball and potentially compete for a starting position.
Boston’s rotation already includes Jayson Tatum, Paul George, Derrick White and Payton Pritchard. Beal could lead the second unit, but he would have to accept fewer touches and a smaller role than Miami might offer.
Bleacher Report Still Believes in Beal’s Shooting
Favale acknowledged that Beal’s days as a dynamic on-ball scorer may be behind him. His shooting ability could still make him valuable.
“While Beal’s on-ball pizzazz may be fading, outside shooting can endure,” Favale wrote. “His past three seasons ranged between forgettable and regrettable, yet he still buried over 40 percent of his triples over that stretch.”
Beal is a career 37.6% shooter from behind the arc. He also has averaged 21.4 points, 4.3 assists and four rebounds across 807 NBA games.
His health is the significant unknown. Beal has not appeared in more than 60 games since the the 2018-19 season. The Celtics already are relying on the 36-year-old George, who played only 37 regular-season games last year. Adding another aging player with availability concerns would create considerable risk.
That risk would be easier to accept on a minimum contract. Beal has earned approximately $342 million during his career, so this decision is unlikely to revolve entirely around money. Playing time, championship odds and his preferred role could determine his destination.

Celtics Should Not Overreact If Beal Picks Miami
Beal would give Boston another player capable of creating his own shot, spacing the floor and carrying the offense for short stretches. He also could help compensate for some of the scoring lost in the blockbuster trade that sent Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers.
He would not be essential to the Celtics’ success. Boston still has a deep collection of guards and wings, along with younger players who need opportunities. If Beal wants guaranteed minutes or a prominent offensive role, the Celtics should not distort their rotation to accommodate him.
The potential reward remains obvious. A healthy and motivated Beal on a minimum contract could become one of the NBA’s best offseason bargains.
Bleacher Report believes that bargain will land in Miami. If that prediction proves correct, Boston may have to deal with Beal as both a missed opportunity and a potential playoff obstacle.
