Ausar Thompson is reportedly impacting the Detroit Pistons' problematic free agency situation with Jalen Duren.
Particularly, many people within the franchise are invested and fully view the rising wing as the Pistons' second-best player behind superstar Cade Cunningham.
“I think there’s a lot of people within the Pistons organization that hold [Thompson] as the second-best player on this team and not Jalen Duren, even though Duren made the All-Star team," ESPN's Vincent Goodwill saind on The Hoop Collective podcast.
"And that affects these [free-agency] discussions.”

Ausar Thompson is currently eligible for a rookie-scale contract extension with the Detroit Pistons, creating a dilemma for the franchise over which of him and Jalen Duren should receive their well-deserved payday.
Thompson averaged 9.9 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 2.0 steals last NBA season, taking a huge leap as one of the league's most promising defenders after being named to his first NBA All-Defensive First Team selection.
Meanwhile, Duren had himself a career year in 2025-26 by tallying 19.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists en route to his first career All-Star and All-NBA nod, but a brutal NBA Playoff showing for Detroit ruined his free agency value.
It was recently suggested that Duren is seriously considering his $9.6 million qualifying offer for next season, which will allow him to leave the Pistons in the 2027 offseason as an unrestricted free agent.
The Pistons are at a crossroads about which player they will be prioritizing, as they are desperately looking to retain both franchise stars heading into next season.
