LeBron James will watch the Knicks raise their championship banner before making his 76ers debut against them.
The NBA confirmed the matchup Tuesday morning. Philadelphia will visit Madison Square Garden on October 20 at 7 p.m. ET in the first game of NBA Opening Night on NBC and Peacock.

The Knicks could not have asked for a better opener
James averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds last season. Philadelphia added him to a group with Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown, so the Knicks get an immediate look at the team expected to push them hardest in the East.
New York already embarrassed Philadelphia in May. The Knicks swept the 76ers in four games, averaged 124.3 points and held them to 102 per game. Philadelphia responded by bringing in the league’s all-time leading scorer.
I wanted this matchup when the NBA started discussing opening night, and the league got it right. A random opponent would have made the banner ceremony feel detached from the season. LeBron and Philadelphia make the game matter as soon as the celebration ends.
OG Anunoby and Mikal Bridges will get the first defensive assignments against James. Karl-Anthony Towns will have to deal with Embiid, and Jalen Brunson gets to attack a Philadelphia backcourt that New York handled in the playoffs.
The 76ers also have to walk into the Garden and watch the team that swept them celebrate a championship. Every introduction, ring and banner will remind Philadelphia how far behind it finished last season.
The Knicks have already looked at how LeBron changed the Eastern Conference. Now they know the first test comes immediately.
Banner night was always going to be loud. Putting LeBron and the 76ers on the other side gives the Knicks a chance to turn the ceremony into their first win of the title defense.
