The Miami Heat are planning to sign former Clemson basketball and football player Ian Schieffelin to an Exhibit 10 contract, according to Anthony Chiang of The Miami Herald.
Miami also plans to sign free-agent forward Ezra Ausar to the same type of deal, but Schieffelin stands out because of his unusual path back to professional basketball.
The 6-foot-8 forward spent four seasons playing college basketball at Clemson before briefly switching sports and joining the Tigers' football program.
Schieffelin traded basketball for football
Schieffelin, 23, was a productive college basketball player, averaging 12.4 points, 9.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists during his senior season in 2024-25.
He shot 49.5% from the field, 34.1% from three-point range and 74.1% from the free-throw line across 34 games while averaging 33.4 minutes.
After completing his basketball career at Clemson, Schieffelin was convinced by Tigers football coach Dabo Swinney to try football.
Swinney has a relationship with Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra, and Schieffelin went on to appear in eight games as a tight end during Clemson's 2025 football season.

Strong Summer League helped earn Heat opportunity
Schieffelin went undrafted but received an opportunity with Miami during Summer League and made an impression.
One of his standout performances came against the Milwaukee Bucks, when he scored 16 points while showing the physicality, energy and versatility that had already defined his college career.
Across Summer League play, Schieffelin averaged 8.4 points and 3.6 rebounds per game.
His combination of rebounding, strength and mobility could make him an intriguing developmental option for Miami after spending part of the previous year playing tight end.
