Heat predicted to trade for $298M generational shooter, 4-time NBA champion in 3-team mega deal image
The Miami Heat started the offseason with an absolute power move by trading for former MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo. Miami then went on to pursue LeBron James, but was unsuccessful after missing out on the four-time NBA champion.
Since then, the Heat have been looking for veterans to add to the roster. Klay Thompson has emerged as a name of significant interest, with Miami viewed as a potential landing spot for the future Hall of Famer.
“My understanding is that Thompson would welcome a return to Los Angeles, where he spent part of his childhood and still owns a home. The Miami Heat are another team frequently mentioned in NBA circles as a potential landing spot for the future Hall of Famer," The Athletic's Christian Clark wrote.
There have been reports of a potential buyout or the Dallas Mavericks trading Thompson. For now, however, a trade appears to be the more likely possibility.
“To this point Dallas has not been looking to find a buyout agreement with Klay Thompson…the Mavericks have been very hesitant, to my understanding, of actually moving forward and agreeing to a buyout with Klay Thompson," The Stein Line’s JakeFischer said. "This market that is shaping up for him, the fact that there is some L.A. interest, the fact that there is Miami interest, there's probably other teams that have interest in Klay Thompson as well.”
The Heat have already made one major trade this summer, and they could potentially make another. Heavy.com’s Alder Almo believes Miami could land Thompson in a potential three-team blockbuster.
“Heat receive: Klay Thompson. Mavericks receive: Bennedict Mathurin on a four-year, $90 million sign-and-trade contract. Clippers receive: Nikola Jovic, Miami’s 2027 second-round pick and Dallas’ 2032 second-round pick,” Almo wrote.
Miami landing Thompson would be huge, as the Heat are in desperate need of shooting on their roster. The four-time NBA champion remains one of the greatest shooters in league history and could eventually earn a spot in the Basketball Hall of Fame.
Thompson has made $298 million in contracts throughout his career. The Heat are trying to fill out their roster around Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo, and pulling off a deal for Thompson would give Miami another major offensive weapon as the organization looks to make a championship-caliber run.
