The Philadelphia 76ers have had a rather successful offseason. With the addition of LeBron James and Jaylen Brown, the 76ers have essentially formed a superteam. While this would be a reason to celebrate, the impact on young players like Tyrese Maxey and V.J. Edgecombe cannot be overlooked.
The situation looks particularly challenging for Tyrese Maxey, who seemed ready to take the next step into becoming the face of the 76ers franchise. After a phenomenal campaign last year, Maxey showed tremendous potential. Now, with more seasoned veterans taking over, the superstar guard may be forced to take a backseat.
This could sow the seeds for some disappointment later in the season, but the 76ers appear to have welcomed the idea of sacrifice. With Maxey being among the first to address it, the 25-year-old recently opened up about how his role would change during a recent episode of the “Number On The Board” podcast. He stated:
“At the end of the day, I want to win, you know what I mean? And I have played with a lot of different people in a lot of different roles. So, at the end of the day, I am going to have to change some of the things, but because of the dynamic of our team- like, we don’t expect The Process [Embiid] to play 70 games. But if he does, we’d be happy with that. So, that’s how you balance it out.”
“You’re going to have games where I may have 20 or 18, and we win. I may have 35, and we win. There’s going to be games where Process doesn’t play, Bron doesn’t play, where I may have to go get 45 or JB may have to get 45, and we win. So, I’m not too messed up tripping on the PPG.”
Tyrese Maxey firmly positioned himself as one of the most exciting players in the NBA last year. As an incandescent talent, Maxey established himself as a lethal offensive threat, averaging 28.3 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 6.6 assists per game while shooting 46.2% from the field and 36.7% from three-point range.
As a player who has shown a gradual increase in scoring output with each season, Maxey’s growth trajectory would position him as a contender for the scoring title. Unfortunately, after the 76ers’ latest moves, this may not be the case.
The biggest issue with creating a superteam is ball distribution. With multiple superstar-level players, all of whom are equally capable of scoring on demand, the 76ers are bound to be an offensive juggernaut. However, the statistical drop-off for each player will be equally significant.
Hence, the concept of sacrifice becomes that much more important. Whether it is V.J. Edgecombe, Tyrese Maxey, or even LeBron James, each star must be willing to make the sacrifices for the common goal of victory.
Although many have raised concerns about how this season could stunt the development of Maxey and Edgecombe, both have shown a commitment to doing what is necessary. With Tyrese Maxey open to stepping back and allowing LeBron James to find his groove, the 76ers can view the current situation favorably.
Still, given James’ age and Embiid’s injury history, the 76ers would do well to focus on the duo of Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown. Since these two players are likely to be the most consistently productive ones on the roster, especially as James embraces the point guard role, Philadelphia can still expect the 25-year-old to be a major scoring threat.
