Warriors reportedly targeting $2M highly athletic guard with Finals experience to join Steph Curry image
The Golden State Warriors have had a disappointing offseason when it comes to adding new names who could help them make a significant playoff run. The team pursued LeBron James and was also involved in rumors surrounding a potential trade for Anthony Davis, but neither of those moves came to fruition.
The only moves Golden State has made this summer have involved bringing back familiar faces on smaller deals.
“The Warriors are officially running it back despite missing the playoffs last season. Golden State re-signed Draymond Green, Kristaps Porzingis, Al Horford, De’Anthony Melton, and Gary Payton II this summer,” NBA writer Jake Weinbach posted.
This has caused many to question the future of four-time NBA champion Steph Curry, who many believe wants to compete at a very high level as he enters the latter stages of his career. Trade rumors surrounding Curry have reached an all-time high, but he is expected to remain with the Warriors.
“Steph Curry is not going to be requesting a trade,” ClutchPoints' Brett Siegel said on the Clutch Scoops podcast. “We have that on extremely good authority from the Warriors that Steph Curry is staying there. He wants to remain there his entire career.”
Still, the Warriors have some room to add a player or two on cheaper deals. One name Golden State remains interested in is Brandon Williams, who appeared in the NBA Finals with the Dallas Mavericks.
“Not much has changed regarding the Warriors’ interest in Brandon Williams, which was reported by ClutchPoints in our story below from July 31. Williams remains a target, along with a few others, for their final roster spots,” Siegel wrote.
This is another small deal for the Warriors that could ultimately pay off. Williams is coming off a breakout season with the Mavericks and is a very athletic guard who could help fill the void created by Jimmy Butler’s absence.
Williams has made only $2 million in his career so far, making him a potential candidate for another smaller deal as he looks to continue proving himself. The Warriors may not have much flexibility when it comes to contracts, but they can still target players with significant upside.
