NBA: Los Angeles Lakers at Golden State Warriors

The Los Angeles Lakers are being sold to Bob Iger and Josh Kushner. This is the second time the team has been sold in 14 months after Jerry Buss and his family owned the team for more than 50 years. It’s also the second time the team has been sold since the Lakers acquired Luka Doncic in a trade from the Dallas Mavericks.
Doncic doesn’t post on social media often despite having 8 million followers on X. Over the weekend he posted about Don Nelson’s passing, which was just his eighth post of 2026. On Wednesday, Aug. 12, he posted about the sale writing, “I look forward to meeting Josh and Bob so we can get to work building something special in LA together.”

He posted something similar last June when Mark Walters became the majority owner, writing, “I’m looking forward to meeting Mark and excited about the future.” He also said he was looking forward to working with both Walters and Jeanie Buss.

Colin Cowherd on Luka and the Lakers sale
It’s honestly a really odd situation for a star player to be in, but as Fox Sports host Colin Cowherd pointed out while discussing the sale on Wednesday, Doncic actually has quite a bit of experience with this kind of thing.

“Mark Cuban, a pretty smart businessman, sold the Mavericks with Luka as the centerpiece,” said Cowherd on his show “The Herd with Colin Cowherd.” “Championship head coach Rick Carlisle quit, year three with Luka. Quit. Walked away. The Mavericks traded him. And not for a big package. Jeanie Buss loved and still loves the Lakers. Sold the team with Luka as the centerpiece. Mark Walters is selling the team, probably has to do with the Feds. And the NBA bailed on the Lakers, who for the first time in eight years, will not make the opening night TV schedule. That is hard to believe. That is crazy. So, there’s a pattern here.”
It’s an interesting sequence of events when you lay it all out like that. Even with Cowherd noting the latest sale may have something to do with the fact that Walter is involved in a federal investigation at the moment, Doncic does have an incredible amount of experience dealing with what is actually a very unique situation.
