Thrive Capital founder Joshua Kushner and former Walt Disney Co. Chief Executive Officer Bob Iger were busy all summer working on a bid to acquire a new National Basketball Association expansion team for Las Vegas.
The pair discussed mascots, team names, logos and an arena. Then, they decided to see if the Los Angeles Lakers, majority owned by investor Mark Walter, might be for sale. Through an intermediary, they reached out to Walter, who has been facing federal scrutiny over how he classifies investments made by his insurance companies.
