Steve Kerr has been just as synonymous with the Golden State Warriors’ golden age of success as the likes of Stephen Curry and Draymond Green. The Warriors head coach made a dramatic U-turn after reportedly being very close to retiring at the end of last season, recently signing a two-year deal to extend his stay.
And well, Warriors owner Joe Lacob reiterated the franchise’s commitment to Kerr during his interview with the San Francisco Standard, claiming that they will not be getting rid of a future Hall-of-Famer merely to ‘bring about change.’
“You just don’t let go of a Hall of Fame coach just to let go of a Hall of Fame coach — just to make change. Steve, I was very impressed in our discussions that he felt he could’ve done a better job last year. We certainly can do a better job, too, of some of the things we do. But he wanted to evaluate it in great detail and really talk about the near-term and what he wanted to get out of it, what we wanted to get out of it,” he said.
The Warriors crashed out of the play-in after a loss to the Phoenix Suns last season after finishing 10th in the Western Conference in the regular season. Kerr himself had claimed after that game that he believed it was “time to move on,” claiming that the decision would have been much easier if Green and Curry were also retiring at the end of the campaign.

Question 1 of 4
In March 2025, Stephen Curry became the first player in NBA history to reach 4,000 career 3-pointers against which team?
Now, however, Lacob believes that fans are going to see an energized Kerr next season.
“And I think they were just very productive discussions about how to go about this next year. I think you’re going to see a very energized and invigorated Steve Kerr this year,” he said.
Of course, both Lacob and GM Mike Dunleavy have been regularly criticized especially on social media, generally because of the lack of additions Golden State have made this offseason. However, Dunleavy himself recently signed an extension, and Lacob claimed he was still one of the “best GMs in the league.”
Now, as the Warriors continue to look for ways to improve the team, it is clear that the front office remains largely unchanged, even if fans may be running out of patience, and Curry? Out of time.
