This time, the two-time Super Bowl champion turned his attention to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Brown headlines the 2027 first-ballot class, and McCoy believes he belongs there immediately. What he said next left his co-hosts stunned and set off a firestorm across the NFL world.
During a recent episode of the Speakeasy podcast, McCoy argued that Antonio Brown deserves first-ballot Hall of Fame induction the moment he becomes eligible in 2027. He then pushed the debate further, comparing Brown directly to Jerry Rice, the receiver widely regarded as the greatest to ever play the position.

His co-hosts sat in stunned silence before McCoy doubled down, insisting that Brown’s peak outweighs anything Rice produced. He pointed to Brown’s dominant run with the Pittsburgh Steelers from 2013 through 2018, a stretch that included multiple All-Pro seasons and two seasons leading the NFL in receiving yards.
That six-year peak remains one of the most productive stretches by any receiver in the modern era and forms the backbone of his highest-graded wide receiver resume.
McCoy’s own Hall of Fame case gives him some standing to weigh in on the conversation. Still, stacking a five or six year peak against Rice’s two-decade reign atop the record books, which includes 1,549 catches, 22,895 receiving yards, and 197 touchdowns, is a difficult argument to win.
However, it didn’t take long for the football world to respond.
Backlash Grows Over Brown-Rice Comparison
The reaction arrived fast. Former linebacker Chad Brown rejected McCoy’s argument outright, pointing to the massive gap between a five-year peak and a 20-season career built on volume, consistency, and championships.
Brown countered: “He is top 5 football player all time.”
Beyond the raw numbers, Brown faces another obstacle on his path to Canton. His ongoing legal case tied to a 2025 shooting incident continues to move through the Florida courts, and voters rarely overlook character concerns when they fill out a Hall of Fame ballot.
McCoy has not backed off his stance despite the criticism, and the debate shows little sign of cooling before Brown’s name officially lands on a ballot for the first time. Where the debate goes next will depend on how voters weigh character alongside production.
For now, McCoy stands alone in ranking Brown ahead of Rice, and the argument remains unsettled. Voters will have the final say once the Hall of Fame Class of 2027 ballot opens, giving the former Steelers wide receiver’s case its first real test.
