The Golden State Warriors‘ quiet offseason has resulted in Stephen Curry’s future becoming a big talking point lately, but team owner Joe Lacob insists all is well. Lacob appeared on the latest episode of The TK Show, where he was asked whether he thinks Curry will be signing an extension with the Warriors.
“I mean, we have to have that conversation with him,” Lacob said. “It’s not the date yet. We’re not really at that point, but we’re getting close. We’ll have that conversation. We’ll see what he wants to do, what his camp wants to do. Mike [Dunleavy Jr.] and our group will decide what’s the appropriate thing from our end, but my guess is Steph, I wouldn’t worry about this too much.
“Steph loves it here,” Lacob continued. “We love him here. I don’t want Steph to go anywhere. I really can’t imagine a scenario where he’s going anywhere. I think we’ll do what needs to be done.”
Curry will be eligible to sign a two-year, $136.7 million extension with the Warriors on Aug. 29. The 38-year-old is on an expiring $62.5 million contract, and you’d imagine the team would be desperate for him to put pen to paper.
Now, not making any additions via free agency or trades isn’t how you convince your superstar to stay. It’s why these exit rumors came about, and Lacob was asked here if Curry ever mentioned to him that he’d like to go elsewhere.
“I don’t think this is even a thing,” Lacob said. “This is just a clickbait thing from all these people that do this kind of thing these days, and there seem to be a lot of them. I don’t believe that any of that’s true. I’m very close with Steph. He lives right near me. He’s incredibly happy, I think, with the organization, with his life.
“He’s got a great life,” Lacob continued. “And his kids are very involved in schools and all that. I just don’t see any of that. I’ve never heard a word about that, and I can’t imagine it. And we certainly don’t want him to go anywhere. That idea that somehow we want him to go, we do not want Steph Curry to go anywhere.
“Love Steph Curry, and we think he’s a great player, and I just think people are completely making a bunch of crap up,” Lacob added. “It’s just totally not true.”
Lacob isn’t the first to dismiss this talk. Warriors forward Draymond Green also shut down rumors about Curry’s growing frustrations with the team. Green added that if his teammate had any issues, he would speak about them.
Curry has spoken about the Warriors’ failed offseason, and he’s being realistic. The 12-time All-Star said the equation changed for them with Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody going down with long-term injuries. Curry also understands that the Warriors need to make moves that help them remain competitive without handicapping the next seven years. The two-time MVP isn’t causing a fuss, which is great for the front office.
Getting back to Lacob, he also shared here that the Warriors had made two very big trade offers in the last six months. They just weren’t able to seal the deal, and that’s pretty much been their story lately.
The Warriors were interested in the likes of LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jaylen Brown, and Anthony Davis this offseason. They lost out in the races for James, Antetokounmpo, and Brown, while Davis has stayed put with the Washington Wizards.
That has led to the Warriors bringing back pretty much the same roster they had, and that isn’t sparking optimism. They finished with a 37-45 record in 2025-26 and missed the playoffs after losing to the Phoenix Suns in the play-in tournament.
The hope would be that the injury bug stays away in 2026-27. Curry was among those who missed time, playing just 43 games in 2025-26. He excelled when he was on the court, as he averaged 26.6 points, 3.6 rebounds, 4.7 assists, 1.1 steals, and 0.4 blocks per game. Curry remains one of the best in the business, but he doesn’t have the pieces around him to get the Warriors back to the top.
