James Harden remains unsigned deep into the NBA offseason, but the Cleveland Cavaliers continue to appear to be his expected destination.
According to ESPN's Shams Charania, Cleveland remains in "constant communication" with Harden and his representatives regarding a new contract that would bring the 11-time All-Star back to the Cavaliers.
The sides are discussing a potential two- or three-year agreement.
At the same time, Cleveland is strongly pursuing two of the top forwards still available: restricted free agent Peyton Watson and unrestricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga.
Cavaliers create more flexibility for Harden deal
Cleveland increased its financial flexibility on Friday by trading Dennis Schroder and cash to the Charlotte Hornets for Tre Mann.
The timing is significant because Harden has effectively allowed Cleveland to keep its options open throughout the offseason.
Earlier this summer, Harden declined his $42.3 million player option for the 2026-27 season while the sides worked toward a new multiyear agreement.
His contract situation has remained unresolved partly because Cleveland has been trying to maximize the money available for additional roster moves.
Harden expected to stay in Cleveland
Harden arrived in Cleveland ahead of the 2026 trade deadline when the Cavaliers acquired him from the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for Darius Garland and draft compensation.
At the time, Harden said he viewed Cleveland as an opportunity to compete for a championship in the Eastern Conference.
Despite remaining one of the biggest names on the free-agent market, there has been little indication that the 36-year-old is preparing to leave Cleveland.
Charania's latest update instead reinforces that both sides continue working toward a reunion.
