The Golden State Warriors are still looking for some added scoring punch. The Dallas Mavericks are looking to move on from Klay Thompson. Put those two together, as insider Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints has, and there’s a scenario where Steph Curry might get his old Splash Brother back.

“At this point, it’s very likely that Klay Thompson will begin the ’26-’27 season on another team outside of the Dallas Mavericks,” said Siegel on a ClutchPoints chat.
Per Siegel, and his podcast partner Tomer Azarly, the Warriors could be interested in a Klay Thompson reunion if he reaches free agency. Will Thompson push for a buyout, despite the Mavs’ reluctance? At this point, it doesn’t appear that the buyout route is something Dallas wants to do. They are hoping for an asset back in return.
Thompson & Curry won four NBA championships together with Golden State, forming the deadly sharpshooting duo known as the Spash Brothers for their all-time shooting abilities. The duo finished top-3 in the NBA in total 3-pointers made five different times. They secured the #1 and #2 spots three seasons in a row (2013-14 through 2015-16).
Last year, however, with Klay in Dallas, the Warriors struggled to find scoring outside of Curry, ranking 19th in Offensive Rating of the league’s 30 teams. Outside of Curry’s 26.6 points per game, the next-highest-scoring Warrior to play in more than 40 games was Brandin Podziemski at 13.8 ppg. Jimmy Butler and his 20 ppg went down for the season after just 38 games (and he won’t be back until well into next season), while Kristaps Porzingis (16.1 ppg) only managed to play in 15 games all year.
One other serious suitor for Klay Thompson
While the LA Lakers were thought to be a prime pursuer of Thompson, “they’re probably out of it now,” Azarly said.
That leaves the Miami Heat as another contender who still maintains strong interest in Klay. The team is in need of floor-spacing around Bam Adebayo and newly acquired Giannis Antetokounmpo.
“Among the few suitors with interest in Thompson, the Miami Heat have long stood out as the team with the most motivation to add one of the league’s all-time best 3-point shooters,” wrote Siegel. “It does seem like the Miami Heat are a viable landing spot… We mentioned Nikola Jovic as an almost identical salary match for Klay Thompson.”
However, the Heat have just $10.6 million to work with before reaching their first-apron hard cap. They do also have $8.9 million of their mid-level exception available. “The best scenario for the Heat is Thompson reaching a buyout with the Mavs,” Siegel added.
One way or another, Thompson wants to get himself to a contending team. He’s not interested in staying in a rebuilding environment.
“I want to compete for a championship. Not necessarily win another one, but have the chance to go and try and get another one,” Thompson said on a Twitch live stream recently. “I want to play a role on a team that can make a deep playoff run, whether it’s this season or next season. That’s really my only goal.”
