As the reigning NBA champions, the New York Knicks are rightfully considered the favorites to come out of the East. But if there’s any team that stands as their biggest threat, it’s the Philadelphia 76ers. Just weeks removed from a run to the East Semis, they turned Paul George and picks into Jaylen Brown, LeBron James, and Anfernee Simons.
For James specifically, the decision to join the 76ers did not come easy, and many factors were considered. According to his former teammate Rajon Rondo, however, one of the biggest considerations for James was locker-room culture and camaraderie.
“I think it’s the personalities in the locker room that make a big difference. LeBron is at a point in his career where being around the right personalities matters just as much as the talent,” said Rondo on the ‘Road Trippin’ podcast. “He wants teammates he can genuinely enjoy being around, have fun with, and build real chemistry with.”
LeBron might only have one or two more years left in the NBA, and he doesn’t want to spend them in an awkward situation. He would rather be in a place where he clicks with his teammates, both on and off the court, and the 76ers checked that box more than any other team. He’s known to be close with Tyrese Maxey and has long held great respect for Joel Embiid. He’s also tight with Nick Nurse, as he was the only coach he spoke to this offseason.
Overall, with the addition of Jaylen Brown, LeBron felt that the 76ers had everything he needed for his “basketball happiness,” both in terms of winning and building healthy, positive relationships in the locker room. How his tenure actually pans out remains to be seen, but Rondo is confident that Philadelphia can win it all.
“Brilliant move. I mean, he’s got arguably the best young point guard in the game,” Rondo added. “I think he averaged 30 points a game this year. Bron is, like, you know, the king on the chessboard. You know, he has a lot of all the pieces, all the right pieces to make the right moves. We all know he’s a great basketball player, one of the greatest basketball minds to play the game. If you give him these types of pieces to play with, you know, I’m an early bet with them being the favorites to win. You know, and my, and my book, I’m not a bettor, but if I were to bet, I would bet the Sixers early.”
Health will obviously be a big factor for the 76ers’ success, but they have one of the strongest rosters in the league on paper. If they can just develop that chemistry and develop a working game plan, the stage will be set for a dominant NBA season.
As for LeBron James, there are no signs of regret over his decision this summer. He had his pick of various teams, but he chose the 76ers, and there’s no going back now. Fortunately, all the signs are pointing in a positive direction, and the future has never looked so bright in Philadelphia.
