The San Antonio Spurs saw a critical exit of a rising front-office talent this offseason, with the University of Connecticut men's basketball team set to hire Charlie Stevens as the newest general manager of its program, via Hardwood Intel.
Stevens will be leaving his Director of Grassroots Scouting position within the Spurs to join the Huskies behind head coach Dan Hurley.
Charlie Stevens leaves Spurs amid rising NBA executive career
Charlie Stevens is a homegrown executive with the San Antonio Spurs, as he spent his entire five-year NBA career climbing the team's front office.
He originally joined the franchise fresh out of Clark University in 2021 as an entry-level operations assistant and was entirely developed by their internal scouting team.
Over the next five seasons, the Spurs promoted him to Grassroots Scouting Coordinator before eventually elevating him to the Director of Grassroots Scouting role last year.
Stevens will be joining a UConn team fresh off a run to the National Championship game. The Huskies advanced to the Final Four and played in the 2026 NCAA National Championship game, where they ultimately finished as runners-up after a 69-63 loss to the Michigan Wolverines.
Beyond Stevens, the Spurs have embraced several key departures to their coaching staff. Associate head coach Sean Sweeney has joined the Orlando Magic as their new head coach, and assistant video coordinator Jon Harris followed him.
San Antonio subsequently tapped Billy Donovan as their new associate head coach to fill Sweeney's void.
On their roster, the defending Western Conference champions notably inked veteran Tobias Harris via a fully guaranteed, two-year, $31 million contract.
