The Knicks did not draw a soft NBA Cup group. They open at Philadelphia on Oct. 30, go to Indiana on Nov. 13, then host Cleveland on Nov. 25 and Miami on Nov. 27.
There are no free nights in that run. Philadelphia brings a division edge, Indiana has been a problem for everybody in the East, and Cleveland and Miami are both the kind of opponents that can turn a regular November game into a real test.
Jalen Brunson and the Knicks will have four chances to make the cup feel important from the start. I like that. A title defense should not need a gentle ramp-up.

Knicks have a serious November test
The NBA Cup does not decide a championship, but it puts a little extra heat on games that can otherwise blur together in November. The Knicks will see familiar opponents with plenty of reasons to take a crack at them.
Philadelphia and Indiana come on the road. Cleveland and Miami come to New York four days apart. There is room for one bad night in a group like this, but there is not much room to coast.
The Knicks will not be sneaking up on anyone after last season. They will get every opponent’s best effort, and a cup group like this forces the rotation to be ready early.
Jalen Brunson gets an early measuring stick
Brunson is built for this part of the schedule. Tight fourth quarters, loud buildings and teams trying to turn a November game into a statement are right in his wheelhouse.
The Knicks earned the target on their back. Now they get a group that will make them deal with it right away.
